Seamus Power set a 36-hole record as he surged into a five-shot lead at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Power recorded his second straight 64 to move to 16 under par at the halfway point.

The Irishman's advantage at this stage is also a tournament record, as Power attempts to book his place at The Masters with only his second PGA Tour win.

He built his lead by holing 10 birdies on day two, atoning for a dropped shot at the par-three 17th with a gain at the par-five last.

Power holed from four feet following an outstanding wedge shot, marking a fitting end as he carded a score of 65 or under for the seventh time in 14 rounds this year.

"My wedge play was great," Power said. "I had three or four shots I hit very, very close and the way I've been putting — they were not gimme birdies, but certainly ones you would expect to make — it just changes your whole complex of your round, of your score.

"I just feel much more comfortable in these positions. I'm putting myself there a little bit more often, so it definitely seems a little easier, but still obviously a lot of work to do over the weekend."

Andrew Putnam, playing Spyglass Hill, ended the day five strokes behind Power, as did Tom Hoge and Adam Svensson, each playing Monterey Peninsula.

Patrick Cantlay is a group of three players at 10 under while seven players, including Jason Day, are six strokes back at nine under.
