NBA reportedly could change draft eligibility rules by 2021

The NBA could change its draft eligibility rules as early as 2021, according to a memo the league sent its team Friday.

The memo, which was obtained by ESPN, is a reminder to teams that the league could change its draft rules prior to the end of the current collective bargaining agreement, which is set to expire in 2024.

The memo says the NBA doesn’t expect any changes to eligibility rules until at least 2021 and it does not specifically mention the one-and-done rule by name, according to ESPN’s report.

The NBA instituted the one-and-done rule, which requires players eligible for the draft to be either 19 years old or one year removed from high school, in 2005.

The league said in the memo it’s considering rule changes because of issues "related to player development and the corruption investigation in college basketball," according to the report.

The issue will be discussed further during the NBA’s meetings at the Las Vegas Summer League, according to ESPN.
