NBA free agency rumors: Warriors preparing for potential ‘seismic change’ this summer

Golden State is preparing for “possibly seismic change” this summer, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Monday during an appearance on “Get Up.” Kevin Durant can opt out of his contract and become a free agent after the season while Klay Thompson’s deal is also set to expire.

Wojnarowski said:

“A lot of teams have been waiting out this Warriors era. If Kevin Durant leaves this team, it opens the league up to a lot of teams who think they’ll be able to start competing for championships again.

“But, even internally in Golden State, there's a sense of, let's try to put aside what's coming in July. We have a chance to do something very rare in sports, to three-peat. Let's try to keep our focus there and win the title, then let July play out the way it's going to. But I think the Warriors are bracing for possibly seismic change within that organization."

Durant has won a pair of NBA titles, along with two Finals MVP awards, during his time with the Warriors and the team is favored to win a championship once again in 2018-19. But he will reportedly consider inking a deal elsewhere and has been linked to the Knicks.

Thompson, meanwhile, is widely expected to re-sign with Golden State. However, he may explore his options if the Warriors do not offer him a max contract, according to ESPN.

Wojnarowski reported:

“The priority for them is Klay Thompson in free agency. If they come with a five-year, $190 million max deal for Klay Thompson, that’s done on July 1, he’s going into the new building with Steph Curry. If they try to do anything less than that, you can expect Klay Thompson to be out in free agency and watch not for the Lakers then, but the Clippers."
