The highly anticipated fight between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-1) and Gennady Golovkin (37-0) unsurprisingly captured the attention of local boxers, both amateur and professional, in Malaysia.

The world's top two middleweights will go head-to-head on September 16 (September 17 in Malaysia) for several titles including the unified WBA (Super), WBC, IBF and lineal middleweight championships.

Fuad Redzuan, who won Malaysia's first boxing gold medal in eight years at the 2017 SEA Games, backed the Mexican to come out on top.

"Both are equally good, but if I have to pick one, I will go with Canelo because he packs a powerful punch," he said.

As for SEA Games compatriot Indran Rama Krishnan, he vouched for the Kazakh powerhouse.

"Golovkin is undefeated for a reason," said the 2017 SEA Games bronze medallist.

"His strength and fitness level are unbelievable and he can really destroy one's face.

"Furthermore, Golovkin has always been fighting at middleweight since his amateur boxing days, while Canelo started out at light middleweight but moved up after losing to Floyd Mayweather [so Golovkin is more experienced].

Similarly, MMA fighter-turned-boxer Hui Keng Fai, who fought recently in the first-ever professional boxing event in Kuala Lumpur after 42 years, believes it will be 38-0 for Golovkin at the end of the day.

"Triple G is one of my favourite boxers and if I have to bet, I will say it is 60-40 in his favour," said the UBO Asia-Pacific Welterweight champion.

"He is safe, measured and very efficient, and he has an iron chin, which is the most crucial thing in boxing.

"I am not sure if Alvarez has the chin because he has not been tested and hit very hard, but Golovkin has withstood powerful punches on many occasions."
