Gareth O'Brien missed a last-minute conversion attempt as Salford Red Devils lost 14-12 at Wakefield Trinity in Super League on Friday.

O'Brien was presented with an opportunity to snatch a draw from the touchline for the visitors but, after missing with his previous two attempts, the full-back could not find the target.

A Scott Grix try and four points from the boot of Liam Finn saw Wakefield leading 8-0 at the break, although Salford fought back through touchdowns from Robert Lui and Niall Evalds.

O'Brien failed to add the extras to either and the hosts soon opened up another lead when Jacob Miller crossed and Finn converted.

Kris Welham's try in the dying moments offered O'Brien his chance for a reprieve, but the former Warrington Wolves man capped a night to forget with another unsuccessful kick.

Wakefield have now won their opening two matches of the season, while Salford have lost both of theirs.
