Kawhi Leonard injury update: Spurs star still not cleared by his medical team

Kawhi Leonard missed the opener of the Spurs' playoff series against the Warriors Saturday and still has not been cleared by his medical team, according to ESPN.

Leonard was officially ruled out for "return from injury management" as the Warriors routed San Antonio 113-92. Leonard is currently in New York to continue rehabilitation on his lingering right quad injury.

There is no timetable on his return, but he is being examined routinely, per ESPN.

Asked if Leonard will rejoin the team during the opening series, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters Sunday "You'll have to ask Kawhi and his group that question."

Warriors coach Steve Kerr told reporters Thursday that if Leonard returned for the series, "we'll be caught off guard."

The Spurs star hasn't played since Jan. 13 as he recovers from quadricep tendinopathy. He's played in only nine games all season.

Leonard has reportedly been near a return several times this season, only to push back the timetable. That saga has led to rumors of tension between Leonard and Spurs management and teammates, and led to speculation that the All-Star wants out of San Antonio.
