Joel Embiid's contract gives 76ers an out in case of major injury

If Joel Embiid were to suffer a career-ending injury, the 76ers have a clause in his contract that would allow them to waive the former No. 3 overall pick.
According to ESPN, the 76ers worked with Embiid's agent to put clauses into the contract that stipulate if Embiid were to suffer a major injury to his feet or back and it caused the 23-year-old to miss 25 games or play less than 1,650 minutes in a season, Philadelphia would be able to waive him if they so choose.
Embiid signed a five-year, $146.5 million max rookie extension Monday which will kick in for the 2018-19 season.

If the Kansas product were to suffer one of the injuries outlined in his new deal, the 76ers would still owe him a substantial amount of money. According to ESPN, if he was hurt next season and the team waived him, the 76ers would still owe Embiid $84.2 million. Simillarlly, Philadelphia would have to pay Embiid $98.2 million after the 2019-20 season if he was waived due to injury, $113.3 million after the 2020-21 season and $129.4 million after the 2021-22 season, the report says.
In order to receive what would amount to as much as $176 million, Embiid, who has played just 31 games across three seasons, must earn first-team All-NBA honors or be voted the NBA's Most Valuable Player in the 2017-18 season.
