Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy has revealed Ryan Hoffman's NRL career may be over after he suffered a hamstring injury on Sunday.

The Storm were beaten for the second week running, going down 17-14 to Cronulla Sharks, and were dealt a further blow as veteran star Hoffman - set to retire, along with Billy Slater, at the end of the year - hobbled off.

The 34-year-old, in his third stint with Melbourne, may not have the opportunity to play again for a team he has won three NRL titles with.

"We're all concerned, [Hoffman] is in tears in the dressing room," said Bellamy. "He has been a wonderful player for our club.

"I'm not too sure he will play again, to be quite honest. They're thinking it's a really major injury.

"I know he will do everything he can to get back again this year and not have to retire on this note.

"They want to let it settle down [on Monday], but Tuesday or Wednesday they will scan it and just see exactly what the problem is. I just hope he can get back before the end of the season."
