Zak Hardaker has been charged for driving while under the influence of alcohol, Wigan Warriors have confirmed.

The former Leeds Rhinos star, who is yet to make his debut for the Warriors as he is still serving a 14-month suspension for testing positive for a banned substance, is to appear in court on October 11.

Hardaker was arrested on the evening of Tuesday September 25 and his court date comes just two days before the Super League Grand Final, which the Warriors will hope to play in.

A brief Wigan statement read: "Wigan Warriors confirm that they are aware of an incident involving Zak Hardaker on Tuesday evening (25th September) which has seen the player charged with driving with excess alcohol. He will appear in court on Thursday 11th October.

"The player is co-operating with the police investigation. Wigan Warriors will allow the legal process to take its course.

"The club will be issuing no further comment at this time."

Hardaker was sacked by Castleford Tigers in February after he was found to have benzoylecgonine – the main metabolite of cocaine – in his system following the team's clash against his former club Leeds in September 2017.

He is due to begin his Wigan career once his suspension ends on November 7, the 26-year-old having agreed a four-year deal in May.
