Griekspoor takes his slice of luck in thrilling defeat of Medvedev

Tallon Griekspoor was grateful for a slice of good fortune, but was sure to capitalise on his luck in a stunning defeat of Daniil Medvedev.
Griekspoor came from behind to triumph 2-6 7-6 (9-7) 7-5 over the Russian at the Dubai Tennis Championships on Thursday.
Medvedev had four match points across Griekspoor's final two service games of the second set, yet each one was clawed back.

Having won a monumental tiebreak, Griekspoor carried that momentum into the decider, though he required four match points of his own to get over the line and into the semi-finals.
"I’m super happy with this win," said Griekspoor.
"I had to fight off a couple of match points in the second set.

"Daniil is an unbelievable player, an unbelievable competitor. He’s been at the top of the rankings for so many years, so I’m very pleased with this win.
"I thought he played so well in the first set. I didn’t do badly, he was just too good. I just tried to stay tough with it, even though I went a break down in the second.
"When I broke him back, I felt like the momentum went a little bit my way. I was a little bit lucky on the match points down, and in the second-set tie-break. I even needed a few match points myself to finish this one off.”
Griekspoor will take on Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals, after the Greek's return to form continued with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-5) 1-6 6-4 win over Matteo Berrettini.
Earlier in the day, Felix Auger-Aliassime reached his fourth semi-final of 2025 by overcoming Marin Cilic 6-4 3-6 6-2
Auger-Aliassime will take on Quentin Halys for a place in the final.
