Gordon Hayward injury update: Celtics forward expected to have surgery after gruesome leg injury

After the game Celtics coach Brad Stevens gave a little bit more information on Hayward's injury, indicating the 27-year-old All-Star has a dislocated left ankle and fractured tibia.

"From what I was told it was a dislocated ankle and a fracture, what is it a tibia down there? Whatever the bone is in the leg," Stevens told reporters after the game. "So the doctors here have looked at it, our doctors have looked at it, and we'll know a lot more (when) he goes straight to the hospital when he gets home."

ESPN reported after the game that Hayward would have surgery Wednesday. But Hayward's agent, Mark Bartelstein, told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski that Hayward would evaluate a course of action Wednesday after undergoing MRI and CT exams in the morning.

Hayward jumped in an effort to catch an alley-oop pass but came down badly after colliding with LeBron James. Medical officials rushed to the floor and put his leg in an air cast before taking him off the court on a stretcher. He left Quicken Loans Arena in an ambulance on the way to the airport to fly back to Boston. According to ESPN, Hayward will be taken to New England Baptist Hospital, where he will have surgery Wednesday.
