A medical examiner has determined the G-League player who collapsed on the court during a game Saturday suffered a "sudden cardiac death."

According to WOOD-TV, Zeke Upshaw was analyzed by Kent County medical examiner Dr. Stephen Cohle, who conducted an autopsy Tuesday. However, the report noted the investigation will remain ongoing for a few weeks.

"Further studies — mainly, including the microscopic examination of the heart tissue — will be forthcoming," Cohle said. "There’s some heart diseases that you can look at them the day of the autopsy, you can look at the heart and say, ‘This guy died of a blocked coronary artery‘ or ‘This guy died of a ruptured aorta.' This is not one of those."

Upshaw, 26, died Monday morning. He had collapsed on the court with less than 50 seconds left in the game and was taken out on a stretcher before being hospitalized.

Grand Rapids Drive coach Ryan Krueger addressed Upshaw's death for the first time Tuesday following the team's practice.

"We've talked multiple times this season about how special this season has been and how well our team had come together," Krueger said. "There's no guy more important to that process than Zeke Upshaw.

"Zeke would want to know why we didn't practice harder today. I think the best part about Zeke was what kind of person he was. ... He was an extremely hard worker — a leader of this team. He was willing to speak up in good times and bad and Zeke was a guy that just made each person here smile."

Upshaw went undrafted after his senior season at Hofstra. He played overseas, then was drafted by the Drive in the fourth round of the G-League's draft in October 2016.
