Ex-USA Gymnastics boss arrested, allegedly tampered with evidence in Larry Nassar case

Penny, who was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Gatlinburg, Tennessee on Wednesday, allegedly ordered the removal of documents from Karolyi Ranch (the main training center for the USA women’s gymnastics team). The removed documents, believed to be related to Nassar’s activities at Karolyi Ranch, were delivered to USA Gymnastics' headquarters in Indianapolis and have since vanished.

According to Wednesday’s release: "The Texas Rangers and the detectives believe that those records are material to their investigation and that the removal of the records by Penny prevented them from reviewing documents that would have helped in their investigation of Nassar as well as assisted with the investigation of other offenses that may have occurred at the Karolyi Ranch.”

Penny’s attorney, Edith Matthai, told USA Today: "Mr. Penny is confident that when all the facts are known the allegations against him will be disproven.”

Nassar was sentenced in January to 40 to 175 years in prison on seven counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Then, in a separate case, Nassar was sentenced to 60 years in prison on child pornography charges.
