The England vice-captain was taken to hospital for a scan to discover the extent of the damage.

Sam Curran took three wickets in the morning session and Ben Stokes struck twice in a frantic passage of play after lunch as India were reduced to 100-5 in reply to 287 all out.

It could have been even worse for the tourists, as Dawid Malan and Alastair Cook dropped Kohli and Hardik Pandya respectively.

Pandya also successfully reviewed after he was given out leg before to a huge Stokes inswinger before he had got off the mark.
