Decathlon world champion Kevin Mayer is out of medal contention at the European Championships after recording fouls in all three of his long-jump attempts.

The Frenchman, who was a silver medallist at the Olympics two years ago, began the day with a personal best in the 100 metres to lead the way after one event, but his bid for a European title unravelled when each of his long-jump attempts were met with a red flag.

Mayer was distraught when he failed to register a score with his third and final jump and he did not start the shot put event.

"It's a black day, I have no excuse, I'm sorry for all those who believed in me," Mayer said in quotes published by L'Equipe.
