Brad Fittler said NRL players would have to make a sacrifice as officials look to restart the season amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The NRL is aiming to resume its season on May 28, although it remains to be seen just what the competition will look like.

Players may all be moved to a single location – perhaps Sydney – to get the campaign going and reduce the chances of players or staff contracting COVID-19.

Fittler, the New South Wales coach and an NRL great, said the players would be making a sacrifice.

"A lot of respect is being paid and they're following direct advice from scientists and they're talking to government at the moment," he told Stats Perform.

"I believe they think the current conditions that we're living in with isolation and then going to training and coming home and going to play the game might suffice so players' lives won't change too much.

"A lot of teams will have to come in from out of town for a couple of weeks and that's why I think they're thinking at the moment that they would live in some hotels in Sydney for a couple of weeks, around Sydney, which would be a sacrifice but it's not chopping off limbs either.

"I think it's quite fair considering the game needs the players at the moment. Simple as that. They need their contribution and they need their sacrifice.

"It feels like given the job the police and the government has done it might not be as bad as living in a bubble and that would have been quite challenging for the players and staff."
