Canberra Raiders forward John Bateman will be out for up to eight weeks after suffering a fractured eye socket.

The England international suffered the injury while attempting to make a tackle in the Raiders' 30-12 victory over Penrith Panthers on Saturday.

It was confirmed by the Raiders on Monday that Bateman requires surgery and will not be fit until round 15 at the earliest.

The 25-year-old has been outstanding in his debut NRL season following his move from Wigan Warriors and will be sorely missed by Canberra.

Meanwhile, Raiders centre Joey Leilua (neck/shoulder) is a doubt for Sunday's clash with leaders Sydney Roosters.
