Astro Supersport's original documentary, Ikhwan, has been crowned Malaysia's Best Sports Programme (One-Off/Series) for the 2019 Asian Academy Creative Awards.
The hour-long documentary, which follows the journey of Malaysian calisthenics athlete Engku Ikhwan competing at the 2018 Street Workout Ultimate Battles in Madrid, Spain, will now represent the country in that category at the Gala Finals in Singapore at the end of the year.
Also competing for the honour are SBS Australia's 2018 FIFA World Cup, Star TV India's 2019 Indian Premier League Final, NHK's Ultra-Trail Mt. Fuji: Battle in the Peaks, Mediacorp Channel 5's ONE: Enter the Dragon, National Geographic's Inside Taiwan's Ultra Marathon, and Workpoint Channel's 10 Fight 10.
"Sharing Ikhwan's inspirational story was a key factor in the decision to pursue this documentary feature.
"It is a powerful message about determination and resilience which hopefully resonates with all viewers from all walks of life.
"It is truly humbling to be recognised for this work. We pledge to continue creating compelling and entertaining stories that serve sports fans in Malaysia and the rest of the world," said Nicholas John, executive producer of Astro Supersport.
Astro has also received nods for 15 other categories, including Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Cinematography, Best Infotainment Programme, Best Lifestyle Programme, Best News Programme, and Best Theme Song or Title Theme.
