76ers, Joel Embiid agree to 5-year, $148M contract extension, report says

The 76ers are apparently confident about Joel Embiid's recovery from a knee injury, as the club reportedly has agreed to a five-year, $148 million extension with the big man.

ESPN was first to report the contract, which is the maximum rookie scale extension. Embiid could make as much as $178 million under the deal if he meets super-max criteria.

It's a hefty raise for Embiid, who is scheduled to make $6.1 million this coming season, and $8 million next year.

Embiid, a native of Cameroon, averaged 20.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game in 31 games as a rookie before being sidelined in late January with a meniscus injury. The 76ers expect big things out of the talented young trio of Embiid, Ben Simmons (the No. 1 overall pick in 2016) and Markelle Fultz (the No. 1 overall selection in 2017) moving forward.
