Steve McMahon criticised Phil Jones for his performance in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Stoke City.
The Manchester United defender was nowhere near Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting when the Cameroonian forward netted the first goal of the day, while he was outmuscled by the same player for Stoke's second.
"He's an okay player and I think he can get away with just being a defender," says the former Liverpool star during his guest appearance on Astro SuperSport for the Premier League match.
"He has so many good players at Manchester United who can protect him [and] if we want to nitpick a weakness [in Manchester United's squad], it would be his position.
"Chris Smalling is no ideal replacement and both of them are very similar."
Former Tottenham defender Gary Stevens, who sat opposite McMahon on Saturday, was less critical of Jones.
"When Jones is fit and at the top of his game, I do think he is a good player because he defends first and foremost and keeps things simple," he said.
"He's an England international and you don't play for any nation easily [if you are not good] in my opinion."
Stevens also said the Red Devils are still defensively vulnerable especially at left-back.
"I would say their main weakness is the left-back position, which [Matteo] Darmian played against Stoke, [Daley] Blind has played and [Luke] Shaw can play too," he added.
"I still think Manchester United have some issues defensively."
