Manchester United great Gary Neville accused his former club of not having a proper transfer strategy during the summer.

In Erik ten Hag's first season at Old Trafford, the Red Devils signed Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez and tried to court, and failed, Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona before the current Premier League season kicked off.

After starting the season with defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, they opened the purse to further recruit Casemiro from Real Madrid and Antony from Ajax.

Despite an improvement in their league form since the rocky start with four straight wins including against Liverpool and Arsenal, Neville was unconvinced by the United management.

"Manchester United wanted to spend about £130m-£140m, they ended up spending £230m," Neville said on The Overlap Fan Debate Xtra.

"Obviously we've seen it before with the Glazer family – loads of trouble, protests building, invest the money to try and appease the fans and basically panic-buy.

"The Casemiro and Antony bids came in two days before the Liverpool game, which was obviously a moment where they just needed to get players in.

"It wasn't the strategy at the start of the summer to spend the money they've spent."
