In her absence, two young national women’s doubles pairs – Low Zi Yu-Noraqilah Maisarah and Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting seized their opportunity and impressed.
143 ranked Low-Noraqilah stunned world number seven Japanese pair Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi in the group stage, while Ong-Ting gave world number one pair Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning a good fight in the quarter-finals by taking a game off the Chinese.
“I am happy to see more pairs stepping up because it is not easy to produce quality partnerships. This healthy competition is good for everyone to keep pushing their limits and keep improving,” she said.
There is good news for Tan herself who fully recovered from her injury, and will feature at the upcoming Malaysia Masters (May 19-24).
“My back has had a serious injury before, so I am more cautious now. But this time no surgery is needed and I have fully recovered.”
On becoming an ambassador with U Mobile, Tan said: ““We travel almost all year round for tournaments and training, so being able to stay connected the moment we land is very important. I can quickly check schedules, coordinate with our team and stay in touch with family without having to worry about changing SIM cards or finding Wi-Fi."
The telecommunications service provider is also set to become the official event partner for the Malaysia Masters.
