Lee Zii Jia is among the shuttlers who embraced the new 3x15 scoring system set to be introduced on the World Tour starting next year.
“Personally for me, I’m not sure what it will change for the men’s singles, but I’m definitely looking forward to it,” he said when asked about the new format at the Hylo Open earlier this week.
For an explosive shuttler like himself, Lee could fully utilize the new scoring format if he gets off the mark well.
The 28-year-old relies heavily on his smashes to score points, and if he starts fast and furious, his opponents will have a tough time to adapt quickly.
India's women’s singles star P.V.Sindhu said the new system will be different, and all competing shuttlers will have to get used to it.
Denmark’s Anders Antonsen, meanwhile, had other thoughts.
“I like these long matches. I like roller coaster rides in a game, so I feel maybe that will disappear with the 15-point scoring system,” he said, a sentiment that was echoed by Bulgarian sisters Stefani Stoeva-Gabriela Stoeva.
French men’s singles shuttler Toma Junior Popov said the new scoring format was used in the French league and “it was a disaster”.
“You cannot play a 15-minute match. You’re not even sweating. It’s not fun to play,” he retorted.
But the players’ sentiments were not all negative.
Spanish shuttlers Lucia Rodriguez and Ruben Garcia said focus is key to doing well in the new system.
