Singapore Open: Ee Wei leaves court in a wheelchair, a day to forget for Malaysia

The sight of a stricken Toh Ee Wei leaving the court in a wheelchair marked a miserable day for the Malaysian contingent at the Singapore Open, which saw all three national pairs crash out on Friday.

Toh and partner Chen Tang Jie were leading Indian pair Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto 18-15 in the first game when Toh hurt her left knee.

The shuttler was in so much pain she had to leave the court on a wheelchair, grimacing in pain as she was wheeled away.

All in all, it was a day to forget for Malaysia and defending men’s doubles champions Aarron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, who lost yet again to Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang.

The 15-21, 15-21 defeat leaves Chia-Soh with a miserable head-to-head record against China’s top pair, having now lost 11 times in 14 meetings.

The Malaysians also lost at the Thomas Cup quarter-finals last month to the same pair.

The other men’s doubles pairs to crash out in the quarter-finals were Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin.

Tai-Kang managed to win the first game against India’s Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, but conceded the next two game to lose 21-19, 17-21, 13-21.

Malaysia Masters runners-up Goh-Izzuddin, who have now played in three consecutive tournaments, lost 18-21, 21-10, 14-21 against Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian-Shohibul Fikri.
