Shahadzyrl rules inaugural Lee Chong Wei Cup with 2 titles

Pahang’s young prodigy Shahadzryl Suhaime emerged as the most successful shuttler at the inaugural Lee Chong Wei Cup, completing an extraordinary journey from the qualifying rounds to become the tournament’s only double champion at Stadium Juara on Sunday.

The 13-year-old played two qualifying matches in each discipline—four altogether—before contesting another 12 matches across the Boys’ Singles and Boys’ Doubles Under-13 draws at the Grand Finals.

After 16 matches over nine demanding days, Shahadzryl walked away with both titles.

His first triumph came in a pulsating Boys’ Singles Under-13 final, where he recovered from a game down to defeat Jorus Lee Yi H’ng 12–15, 15–12, 15–12.

Hours later, he returned to the court alongside Gan Giap Han and completed the double with a commanding 15–12, 15–12 victory over Ahmad Aniq Rafiq Mohd Zariffi and Lucas Ho Ming Joon.

“I’m extremely happy to have won two titles at this tournament,” said Shahadzryl, a Bukit Jalil Sports School student.

“From the beginning, I had already set myself the target of winning both titles.”

The victory could also bring both youngsters closer to their greatest ambition: an opportunity to enter the national badminton setup.

“It would mean so much to me because joining BAM (Badminton Association of Malaysia) has been my dream since I was young,” Shahadzryl said. “I see how well the players there perform, and I want the chance to go there and prove myself.”

Lee, meanwhile, expressed his satisfaction with the inaugural staging of the tournament, which attracted some 2,200 entries.

“Overall, I am very satisfied,” said the former world number one. 

“We saw the junior players give everything on court, and their fighting spirit was extraordinary. Some won, some lost and some were in tears, but that is part of sport.

“To those who lost, do not give up. Go home, train harder and prepare for the many tournaments still to come. Those who won must also continue working and fighting for their next competition.”
