In the end, Hoh’s battling spirit saw him secure a massive 21-9, 14-21, 24-22 victory over Chinese Taipei’s Chi Yu-jen, the men’s singles fifth seed.

Hoh’s reward is a showdown against an opponent from the same country, Sun Li-yang.

Wong also powered to a 21-19, 13-21, 23-21 win over American Beiwen Zhang.

The world number 37 trailed her eight seeded opponent for most parts of the deciding game, before finding the extra boost in the closing stages where she drew level at 18-18, before keeping her cool to secure the win in added time.

Wong’s next assignment comes against India’s Malvika Bansod, whom the Malaysian is expected to beat.

Hoh and Wong’s resilience will give their confidence a massive boost ahead of the Thomas Cup happening next month.

The Orleans Masters is the final event on the World Tour for the national shuttlers who are set to compete at next month’s team event in Denmark.
