MBPJ Strengthens Sports Development Quality in 2025 Through Infrastructure, Community and Elite Athlete Strategies

The year 2025 marks a more comprehensive and strategic approach by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) in strengthening sports development across the city. Under the leadership of Petaling Jaya Mayor, Dato’ Mohamad Zahri Samingon, various initiatives have been introduced not only to improve sports facilities, but also to enhance community engagement, integrate sports ecosystems and support elite athletes.

This approach reflects MBPJ’s commitment to creating a more progressive, sustainable and inclusive sporting culture that aligns with the needs of an urban community.

One of the key initiatives involves transforming underutilized futsal courts into pickleball and padel courts in SS7, Kelana Jaya. This move demonstrates MBPJ’s ability to adapt existing infrastructure according to current sports trends and public interest without incurring excessive development costs.

The initiative not only optimizes the use of existing assets, but also creates more recreational opportunities for the community, especially among younger generations and urban professionals.

At the same time, MBPJ is planning the development of the Kelana Jaya Sports Hub, which aims to integrate several parks and sports facilities into a single, well-organized and community-friendly ecosystem.

The concept is expected to provide easier access to various sports activities while improving the overall management and maintenance of sports facilities in a more systematic manner. It also has the potential to position Petaling Jaya as a prime venue for community tournaments and large-scale sporting events in the future.

Beyond infrastructure development, MBPJ is also focusing on activating the community through impactful sports programs and events. In conjunction with the city’s 19th anniversary celebration, several events have been organized, including the PJ Tower Run, Mayor’s Cup Tenpin Bowling, PJ 10K Run and community football tournaments.

Such programs encourage healthier lifestyles, strengthen social connections among diverse communities and reinforce Petaling Jaya’s identity as an active and sports-friendly city.

MBPJ has also demonstrated strong commitment in supporting world-class athletes by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with national tower runner Soh Wai Ching, with sponsorship support valued at RM75,000.

This support is crucial in helping elite athletes achieve greater financial stability while simultaneously elevating the name of Petaling Jaya on the international stage. It also highlights the importance of balancing grassroots sports development with elite athlete support.

In terms of long-term planning, the redevelopment of Dataran Petaling Jaya will also include proposals for world-class sports facilities such as a swimming center and multi-purpose sports complex.

These investments are expected to enhance the city’s social and economic value while opening opportunities for Petaling Jaya to host state and national-level sporting events in the future.

Overall, MBPJ’s sports development strategy can be summarized into three core pillars: modern and adaptive infrastructure development, active community participation, and holistic support for elite athletes.

If these efforts continue consistently and strategically, Petaling Jaya has the potential to emerge as one of the most progressive cities in Malaysia for community sports development, while becoming a model for other local authorities nationwide.
