Lin Dan had a tongue-and-cheek advice for Kento Momota as the Japanese competed in the final of the Wuhan Lin Dan Cup which he came from behind to win on Sunday.
"When others attack, you defend," was Lin's cheeky comment when asked about what he would advice the former two-time world champion who played without a coach in the final.
Even without anyone behind him, Momota was composed to beat China's Wang Zheng Xing 13-15, 15-6, 15-13 to win his first tournament in three years.
Momota's last title came when he was still a professional shuttler on the World Tour, which saw him clinch the Korea Masters title back in 2023.
The 32-year-old retired from the game back in 2024, but he still remained active in the sport through his NTT club in Japan.
Lin Dan was certainly thrilled to see Momota finally competing in his tournament.
Momota was supposed to play in last year's Lin Dan Cup, but a back surgery mean he had to wait to make his debut in this lucrative event.
The Japanese did not disappoint, displaying a calm and steady performance, while also showcasing the defensive strengths Lin wanted him to produce.
Momota pocketed RM122,000 and a massive trophy for his efforts which was awarded by Lin himself.
The five-time world champion also embraced Momota after the prize giving, which indicated how happy he was to see his star player win.
