K. Letshaana managed to score a total of 21 points against An Se-young at the Korea Open second round on Thursday, and can take pride in her performance despite the 10-21, 12-21 loss.
That’s because the world number one has been in stunning form this year.
The South Korean has won all but one tournament she’s participated in this year.
The 24-year-old’s only defeat came at the All-England final in March, and China’s Wang Zhi Yi is the only shuttler to beat her this year.
So Letshaana came into this Super 500 last-16 clash as a massive underdog against an opponent who possessed a 98 percent win rate this year.
The Malaysian was outclassed in the first game, but had her moments with some deft returns in the front court which left An rooted.
Letshaana continued to dig deep in the second game to put points on the board against An who is seeking her 52nd win of the year.
The home and hot favourite eventually sealed the win in 36-minutes.
If An goes on to win this event on Sunday, it would be her 49th career title.
She is now chasing a 11th title of the year, having already won the Malaysia Open, India Open, Asia Championships, Singapore Open, Indonesia Open, World Championships, China Masters, Asian Games, Denmark Open and French Open.
An had previously already surpassed former Indonesian shuttler Susi Susanti as the most successful women’s singles shuttler of all time when she won last month’s Denmark Open for her 47th career title.
