Johor Darul Ta'zim F.C. saw their AFC Champions League Elite campaign come to an end after a narrow 2-1 defeat to defending champions Al-Ahli Saudi FC in the quarter-finals.

Despite a spirited display, the Southern Tigers were unable to hold off the Saudi giants, who showcased their experience and quality to secure a place in the semi-finals.

JDT stunned the hosts early in the match, taking the lead in the 20th minute through an own goal forced by their attacking pressure.

The Malaysian champions looked composed and disciplined, capitalising on a rare defensive lapse from Al-Ahli.

Al-Ahli were reduced to 10 men after a red card to Ali Majrashi, giving JDT a numerical advantage.

However, the turning point came just before halftime when Franck Kessié rose highest to head home the equaliser from a corner.

Even with 10 men, Al-Ahli’s composure under pressure highlighted their championship pedigree.

The decisive moment arrived in the 54th minute when Galeno fired in a powerful strike from outside the box to give Al-Ahli the lead.

JDT pushed forward in search of an equaliser, introducing attacking reinforcements late in the game, but were unable to break through the Saudi side’s resilient defence.

While the result marks the end of JDT’s journey in this edition of the AFC Champions League Elite, their performance against one of Asia’s elite clubs offered plenty of positives.

i) Competed toe-to-toe with defending champions
ii) Showed tactical discipline and resilience
iii) Demonstrated growing competitiveness on the continental stage

JDT may be out of the competition, but this was far from a disappointing campaign, against the defending champions, they proved they belong at this level.

And if this performance is any indication, their breakthrough moment in Asia may only be a matter of time.
