Chong Wei act of kindness cherished by boy, parents at Lee Chong Wei Cup

For Gan Sin Han, an act of kindness from Lee Chong Wei during the just concluded Lee Chong Wei Cup (LCWC) is a moment he will cherish for a lifetime.

The young shuttler was a participant at the premiere youth competition, and was using a worn-out pair of shoes as he played in the Boys Singles Under-13 qualifying rounds.

Lee, who was present at Stadium Juara to witness the action, noticed Gan’s shoes and decided to buy him a new pair.

The former world number one met Gan’s mother, who explained the boy did not want to trouble his parents for a new pair as long as the shoes could be used.

“He said as long as his feet wouldn’t get hurt, the shoes could still protect him. He had already been wearing them since the first day,” said Gan’s mother Koh Ker Hui.

Lee decided right away he was getting the boy a new pair.

Taking him straight to the Yonex booth which are one of the LCWC sponsors, the national icon initially asked him to get the latest model.

Gan, however, wanted a pair of his choice, which Lee agreed to with a laugh.

Accompanying Gan to buy the shoes were also his parents, who were beaming at the act of kindness from the LCWC tournament founder, who also signed a Yonex jersey for the boy.

“I’m really very grateful to Datuk Lee Chong Wei. He is very approachable and he takes good care of every player. He has put a lot of effort into organizing such a major tournament for players throughout Malaysia.

“He even noticed that my child’s shoes were damaged and showed concern for him. He really cares about every player and every young child here. I’m really, really grateful to him,” said Koh.

Getting a new pair of shoes made an impact to Gan’s game, who battled his way from the qualifying rounds to reach the main draw, where he was eventually beaten by the champion Shahadzryl Suhaime in the round of 32.

For Gan, that act of generosity from Lee will remain with him forever.

Perhaps it may even inspire greatness on-court, and to always be kind and help others himself.
