After years of coming to Malaysia on a disciplined food regime due to competitions, two-time Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen has decided to go wild with the local cuisine, which includes satay and char kuey teow.
“Malaysian friends, for so many years you sent me so many local food recommendations. Now it’s time to try. Malaysia Boleh!,” Axelsen recently posted on his social media.
The Danish star was seen with a table full of food, which also included oysters, lobak, herbal soup and coconut water.
Throughout his career, Axelsen had always looked after himself well and that included maintaining a healthy nutrition.
Even when he was competing in Malaysia, his routine was usually made up of training, breakfast at the hotel, gym workouts, heading to arena for competitions before heading back to the hotel.
It was that committed dedication that allowed him to capture two Malaysia Masters titles (2018 & 2024) and two Malaysia Open silverwares (2022 & 2023).
But since announcing his retirement in April, the former world number one can be forgiven for finally allowing himself to indulge, especially in a food haven like Malaysia.
Axelsen is still heavily involved in the sport as an ambassador and is presumably in the country for some badminton related event.
The 32-year-old is not the only shuttler who is enjoying himself in Kuala Lumpur.
Axelsen’s former national team-mate Anders Antonsen was also in town to relax after winning the Thailand Open.
The world number three skipped the Malaysia Masters to take a week off before heading to the Singapore Open starting from Tuesday.
