Asian Games: Aaron-Kai Wun's defeat leaves two Malaysian pairs with medal hopes

Aaron Chia-Tee Kai Wun's straight game defeat to world number one pair Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae leaves Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin and Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah to content for an Asian Games medal in the doubles department.

Scratch pairing Chia-Tee were no match for Kim-Seo as they suffered a 19-21, 16-21 defeat despite holding decent leads in both games.

The Malaysian led the first game 15-11 and were cruising 10-5 in the second game, but the South Koreans battled back to secure the deserved win.

That defeat leaves world number six Goh-Izzuddin as the only Malaysian men's doubles left in the competition.

The professional duo were good value in their 21-19, 21-16 win over Japanese pair Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi.

But in order to secure a medal, Goh-Izzuddin will most likely need to contend against China's top pair Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang in the quarter-finals.

Tan-Thinaah also turned in an confident performance to beat Thailand's Hathaithip Mijad-Napapakorn Tungkasatan 21-8, 21-12.

They will next go to face Indian pair Gayathri Gopichand-Tressa Jolly for a place in the last four.

While the Malaysian world number five have beaten this Indian pair six times in eight meetings, they will need to be wary of the threat Gopichand-Jolly can pose, especially after they stunned world number three home pair Mayu Matsumoto-Yuki Fukushina in straight games.
