It is safe to say Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik are experiencing a slump in performance.
Last time this year, the Malaysians had already won three titles – the Badminton Asia Championships, the Thailand Open and the Singapore Open.
This year, while they have done well to reach two finals at the Malaysia Open and All-England, they could not finish with silverware.
But more than that, it is their recent form which has been troubling.
The now world number three were convincingly dismantled at the Malaysia Masters semi-finals by Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin, before they crashed out at the Singapore Open last eight in straight games to China’s Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang.
At the Indonesia Open yesterday, their journey ended in the second round against young local pair Raymond Indra-Nikolaus Joaquin.
Chia said the Indonesian’s playing without anything to lose, while also lamenting the court conditions at Istora Senayan.
It is likely Chia-Soh will not play on the World Tour until the Japan Open next month.
This is good, as it will give the pair a chance to discuss with coaches Herry Iman Pierngaldi and Rexy Mainaky on their shortcomings.
Chia-Soh have set a high benchmark for themselves by constantly challenging for titles.
So to not have any after nine tournaments which they have competed on the World Tour so far this year, is a downgrade by their lofty standards.
