The Badminton World Federation announced the 2027 & 2028 season calendar on Tuesday, with several key changes to the Malaysia Open and Malaysia Masters events.
Stadium Astro highlights three key factors for home fans to look forward to in the next two years.
10-Day Malaysia Open
This Super 1000 event will be the season opener for the 2027 season (Jan 21-31), and will take place from Feb 3-13 in 2028.
10 days of badminton will give fans the opportunity to witness plenty of high-quality action, besides the opportunity to have more interaction with the players themselves.
This is because a longer tournament also allows for more rest days, giving the fans and their stars to engage in meet-and-greet sessions as part of sponsors commitment.
Another big highlight is that all 1,095 matches from all Super 1000 events will be broadcasted globally.
New 3x15 scoring format
As the first event on the World Tour, the 2027 Malaysia Open will witness the debut of the 3x15 scoring system.
With fans and the players having mixed reactions towards the new system, the new scoring format is set to be one of the key talking points at this tournament.
With shorter matches and quicker rallies expected, this new scoring system will guarantee excitement at the least.
Malaysia Masters held second half of the year
The 2027 Malaysia Masters will take place from Aug 17-22, while the 2028 edition will happen from June 6-11.
This Super 500 event traditionally happens in the third week of May, so the shift in dates gives a longer duration from the Malaysia Open, which would also allow fans more time to save up and catch the Malaysia Masters action live.
The 2027 edition is also expected to have added significance as it falls during the 2028 Olympic qualifying window, which would guarantee top stars participation.
