Malaysian badminton enjoyed arguably its best week this year on both the junior and senior stage, as national shuttlers claimed the Arctic Open, World Junior Championships and the Denmark Open in the span of eight days.
Stadium Astro takes a look at three victories on the global stage that gave Malaysians plenty of reasons to rejoice.
Aaron Tai-Yap Roy King claim Arctic Open
The good news started rolling with this unexpected victory in this Super 500 event held in Vantaa, Finland on Oct 11.
Playing in only their first event together, this tournament was expected to give Tai-Yap nothing more than some much needed playing time with each other.
But the pair defied all odds to win the men’s doubles without dropping a game the entire week.
The national doubles coaches may have just unlocked a gem combination.
Zi Yu-Genevie make history as World Junior Champions
In the history of the World Junior Championships, Malaysia had never won the Girls’ Doubles crown before.
All that changed when Low Zi Yu-Genevie Lim triumphed in Cairo, Egypt on Saturday (Oct 17) to prove the country’s development pipeline is flourishing.
Low also made history for herself as she became the youngest ever world junior champion, at only 16.
While both shuttlers gradually plot their way into excelling in the senior ranks, their triumph over the weekend will remain a lasting one.
Pearly-Thinaah are heroes in Denmark
The title celebrations over the past weekend culminated in Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah’s commanding straight game victory to win the Denmark Open women's doubles title on Sunday.
Tan-Thinaah, who overcame their opponents in commanding fashion in Sunday's final (Oct 18), also ended an 18-year wait for a Malaysian women’s pair to win the Denmark Open since 2008.
While it may be pointed out this Super 750 event was missing the world top two pairs – China’s Tan Ning-Liu Sheng Shu & South Korea’s Lee Soo-hee-Baek Ha-na, the Malaysians would have still reigned supreme in the final had they played.
Such was their confidence and chemistry with each other, Tan-Thinaah were impeccable throughout the week as they only dropped one game throughout.
Tan is also playing in a more fluid manner, which is a testament to her being fully fit again.
The girls have now expressed their desire to continue their momentum at this week’s French Open which they won four years ago.
