2 Lee Chong Wei Cup in 2027 after successful first event

Lee Chong Wei has big plans for the Lee Chong Wei Cup (LCWC) 2.0: To make it bigger, better and beyond Malaysia.

After a successful inaugural event which saw over 2,000 shuttlers come together at the Stadium Juara for nine-days of badminton, Lee wants to build on that momentum for the 2027 edition.

“For next year, I plan to have two events. One local for Malaysian players and an international one. We are looking at the right dates and need to get the sanctioning from Badminton Asia.

“What we need are the right dates so it doesn’t clash with other junior competitions, for instance in Indonesia and Thailand,” he said, adding there will be discussions to absorb some talents who impressed into the national team.

“There are a few players whom are capable of being part of the national team. We will have discussions with the coaches who were scouting at the venue. We are not only looking at players who reached the semi-final or final.

“If we see potential in a player—even someone who lost in the quarterfinals or earlier—we may invite them for a selection trial. We want to see what they can do when they enter the national training environment.”

In the final, Pahang’s young prodigy Shahadzryl Suhaime emerged as the most successful shuttler at the inaugural Lee Chong Wei Cup, completing an extraordinary journey from the qualifying rounds to become the tournament’s only double champion.

Lee also thanked organisers SportsIntel, Astro and the media for supporting the tournament, acknowledging that delivering an event of such scale was a collective effort.
