St Helens marked their Super League Leaders' Shield triumph with a convincing 30-12 victory at second-placed Warrington Wolves in a dress rehearsal for the Challenge Cup final.

The Saints' victory over Wakefield Trinity last time out meant the Wolves' defeat to Catalans Dragons – which was marred by controversy – ensured Justin Holbrook's side's place at the top heading into the play-offs.

The league leaders celebrated in style on Thursday, with a dominant second-half display taking the game away from the Wolves, who took an early lead when Jake Mamo bundled over.

Their lead was short-lived, impressive youngster Jack Welsby teeing up Kevin Naiqama, and though Josh Thewlis restored Warrington's advantage, Jonny Lomax's try ensured the Saints were in front heading into the break.

A third win over Warrington this season, but the big one in less than three weeks, is when it really counts! Same again at Wembley, boys! #saintsandproud pic.twitter.com/76McupreGZ

Stefan Ratchford's penalty had brought Wolves within touching distance, but the Saints clicked through the gears after the restart, with Joseph Paulo opening his account for the club following a superb run from Kyle Amor.

Victory was all but assured when Matty Costello touched down with 18 minutes remaining, though the try of the night came soon after, as Tommy Makinson dived over acrobatically in the corner, with the Saints now 14 points clear at the top.
