Queensland coach Kevin Walters is confident Dane Gagai will be fit for Wednesday's opening State of Origin match against New South Wales at the MCG.

Gagai, 27, reportedly suffered a compound dislocation of his finger during Tuesday's captain's run and it looked set to rule him out of action.

But Walters said he would wait on scans to confirm the severity of the injury, but is confident the South Sydney Rabbitohs winger will be ready in time.

"Gagai came out to train and I expect him to play," he said.

"He's in a fair bit of pain. He finished off the session and we expect him to play."

The 2017 Wally Lewis Medallist's injury is another blow to the Maroons, who may need to further reshuffle their back line.

It comes after star full-back Billy Slater was ruled out of game one earlier this week with a hamstring problem.
