Tony Romo fails to qualify for U.S. Open

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo's came up short in his to qualify for the U.S. Open.

Romo failed to advance to June's major championship in New York after shooting a five-over-par 77 at Monday's local qualifying tournament in Plano, Texas.

Romo, a four-time Pro Bowl player who retired last year, has turned his attention to golf, though the 38-year-old's PGA Tour debut saw him finish last at last month's Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship.

Romo — among 132 participants on Monday — did not fare much better as he bowed out on the first day of qualifying at Gleneagles Country Club.

The top-eight finishers advance to the 36-hole sectional qualifying event on June 4.

It marked the second consecutive year Romo — who reached the stage in 2010 — fell at the local stage of U.S. Open qualifying, having shot a 75 during his qualifier in Aledo, Texas.
