Simon Easterby believes the return of familiar faces to Ireland's Six Nations squad will "massively increase" his side's "competitiveness".

Interim coach Easterby will lead Ireland's quest for a third straight title in the absence of Andy Farrell, who has temporarily stepped aside to focus on the British and Irish Lions.

The likes of Dan Sheehan, Tadhg Furlong and Jimmy O'Brien have been recalled to the 36-man party after injury, while Caelan Doris continues as captain.

The uncapped Jack Boyle has been called up to replace the suspended Tom O'Toole, who is due to miss Ireland's opening two games as part of a six-match ban.

James Lowe is also included, having not played since November, while Sam Prendergast, Jack Crowley and Ciaran Frawley provide Easterby's options at fly-half.

Meanwhile, James McNabney, Ben Murphy and Cathal Forde have been included as development players, and will be part of the team's pre-tournament training camp in Portugal.

"We are delighted to welcome back a number of players who were unavailable for the recent Autumn Nations Series and their return will further boost competition levels across the panel," Easterby said.

"While there is a good sense of continuity in selection, having those players back massively increases our competitiveness.

"It's also a great opportunity for three young Development Players - James, Ben and Cathal - to continue their recent good run of form for their provinces and continue their development."

Ireland begin their campaign at home to England on 1 February, before concluding it away in Italy on March 15.
