Fariq Mohamad's four-goal performance helped Selangor beat Perak 5-0 and surge to the top of the 2019 Malaysia Premier Futsal League standings on the opening weekend.

At the Panasonic Shah Alam National Sports Complex on Sunday, the Selangor captain opened the scoring against the run of play as Perak were dominating the early minutes and looking more likely to break the deadlock.

With five minutes left in the first half when he tapped in a spilled ball from the Perak goalkeeper, who failed to deal with Shamsul Akmar Zamri's strike.

Three minutes later, Farid doubled Selangor's lead with a stunning volley from a corner kick.

He then became the first hat-trick goal-scorer of the newly created professional futsal league in the 34th minute when he finished off a quick counter-attack from close range.

Shortly after Perak captain Shamar Fadzil was given his marching order, Farid took the opportunity to bag his fourth goal before Ridhwan Zainal rounded off the night's demolition in the final minute.

With the 5-0 result, it proved to be a goal-laden day in Shah Alam, with two earlier matches featured 18 goals in total, including 12 between Penang and KL City.

In the 12-goal thriller, KL City had the lead on three ocassions, but Penang pegged back each time before pulling clear with four straight goals.

KL City attempted to stage a late comeback with goals from Muzhaffar Tahar and Aqim Salihuddin in the dying minutes of the game, which eventually finished 7-5 in favour of the islanders.

Their fellow namesake, Kuala Lumpur, also suffered a defeat as they lost 4-2 to Pahang.

As for the other MPFL teams, Kedah and Terengganu fought out a 2-2 draw on Saturday, while Melaka, who won the final season of the National Futsal League, were not in action to compete in the 2019 AFF Futsal Cup.
