Scottie Scheffler moved to the top of the leaderboard after a long but fruitful day at the Houston Open, taking a one-stroke lead into the final round.

After Friday's second round was halted due to darkness, players had to return to the course early Saturday to finish before starting the third.

Scheffler wrapped up the second round by setting a course record with an eight-under-par 62, then carded a 69 in round three to take the overall lead at seven under for the tournament.

The American has held or shared the lead after 54 holes only once before, at the 2020 American Express, where he finished third.

"I feel like I’m playing solid golf right now," Scheffler told reporters. "I’m hitting a decent amount of fairways, a decent amount of greens, starting to roll the ball pretty good.

"There’s a few days where the putts may have not all gone in, but I always seem to be hitting them right around the cup at the appropriate speed so they’re bound to start falling eventually."

Five players are just a shot behind Scheffler: Jhonattan Vegas (68), Matthew Wolff (69), Kramer Hickok (70), Kevin Tway (73) and third-round leader Martin Trainer (74).

After back-to-back 65s, Trainer had a rough day with four bogeys and a double outweighing a pair of birdies.

Wolff had been in position to take the lead but double-bogeyed 17 after hitting his second shot in the water.

Jason Kokrak (66), Russell Henley (68) and Luke List (69) are at five under with Marc Leishman (71), Vincent Whaley (65), Adam Schenk (72) and Adam Long (73) a further stroke behind at four under.

Among those who missed the one-over-par cut established Saturday morning were Ian Poulter and Tony Finau at two over and Brooks Koepka at three over.
