Sale Sharks have confirmed their decisive Premiership clash with Worcester Warriors will go ahead on Sunday despite "a number" of positive coronavirus tests at the club.

Steve Diamond's side occupy the fourth and final play-off spot ahead of the final round of the regular season.

Sale on Friday revealed an unspecified number of positive COVID-19 tests have been returned before the huge game at the AJ Bell Stadium.

But the depleted Sharks will not have to forfeit the match, which would result in a 20-0 defeat.

A club statement said: "Sale Sharks can confirm that their Premiership round 22 match with Worcester Warriors, scheduled for 3pm on Sunday 4th October, will go ahead as planned.

"Although Sale Sharks have been subject to a number of positive COVID-19 tests, after a thorough consultation, the club, its healthcare professionals and rugby management are confident the fixture can be fulfilled safely in accordance with all COVID-19 guidelines.

"As directed by Premiership Rugby earlier today, the Sharks matchday-23 to face Worcester Warriors will be announced at 12:00pm on Saturday 3rd October."

Sale are only ahead of fifth-placed Bristol Bears, who travel to London Irish on Sunday, on points difference.
