The NFL and NBA are going to battle, albeit on the golf course, in a charity event headed by Aaron Rodgers and Chris Paul.

The tussle for supremacy in American sports has long been waged, and Green Bay Packers quarterback Rodgers will front a team against Houston Rockets star Paul this August.

In a joint venture between Turner Sports and CAA Sports, Rodgers will draft a team of NFL players past and present, while Paul will do likewise from the pantheon of NBA greats.

The tournament, which will take place in August, will follow a format similar to that of the Ryder Cup, which will be hosted at Le Golf National near Paris a month later.

"I couldn't be more excited for 'The Showdown' this summer," said Rodgers.

"While the NFL and NBA are home to many of the greatest athletes in the world, a golf course is an entirely different battlefield.

"I am extremely passionate about golf, and look forward to assembling a team of the NFL's top golfers to determine, once and for all, which league is truly top on the links."

Paul added: "Golf is a favourite sport of mine and I'm thrilled to be hosting this unique tournament where NBA and NFL athletes will trade the court and field for the green.

"Competitiveness is essential in our respective sports and I look forward to competing alongside and against the best athletes while raising money for charity."

Rodgers is no stranger to the golf course and played in February's Pro-Am at Pebble Beach, while Paul teed it up alongside Tiger Woods at the 2015 Wyndham Championship Pro-Am.
