Melbourne Storm missed the chance to clinch a third successive minor premiership as Simon Mannering experienced mixed fortunes on the day he reached a notable personal milestone for New Zealand Warriors.

A depleted Melbourne side slipped up at home to Penrith on Friday, the Panthers scoring five tries to run out 22-16 victors and boost their hopes of securing a home final in the play-offs.

The result means Craig Bellamy's table-topping Storm will now have to wait to see if they will finish the regular season in first place, with Sydney Roosters needing to win by 27 points against Parramatta Eels on Saturday to leapfrog over them and secure the JJ Giltinan Shield.

Josh Mansour and Waqa Blake both crossed twice for Penrith, who recorded their first triumph in Melbourne since 2005.

At Mt Smart Stadium, the Warriors marked Mannering’s 300th first-grade appearance with a hard-fought 20-16 win over Canberra Raiders – but the former New Zealand international was not on the field to celebrate at full time.

A sternum injury forced Mannering to the bench during his landmark outing, meaning he had to watch on as a pair of penalties from Shaun Johnson in the final quarter secured victory.

David Fusitu'a extended his advantage at the top of the try-scoring charts with a first-half finish for the Warriors, who can now look forward to their first appearance in the NRL finals since 2011.

The hosts had led 16-8 at one stage before the Raiders pegged them back, Elliott Whitehead on hand to score after team-mate Jordan Rapana had spectacularly flicked the ball back inside to keep the play alive.
