Reigning World and Olympic sprint cycling champion Kristina Vogel is in a serious condition after a training crash left her needing to be airlifted to hospital in Berlin.
Vogel is one track cycling's all-time greats with 16 major tournament gold medals to her name – including triumphs at the last two Olympic Games.
The German – a record 11-time world champion – will undergo surgery in Berlin on Wednesday after colliding with another rider during a training camp in Cottbus.
"We are shocked," a German Cycling Federation statement read on Facebook. "Kristina Vogel was seriously injured during training on the track in Cottbus today.
"She collided at full speed with another racer who was also training on the racecourse. Kristina is being flown to Berlin and will be operated on in the next few hours.
"Dear Kristina, we all keep our fingers crossed for you."
