The Warriors got off to a roaring start Tuesday night in their season opener against the Rockets, but they hit a wall in the second quarter, and eventually fell to Houston 122-121 to start the season 0-1 for the second straight year.
Kevin Durant had a chance to win it in the final seconds at Oracle Arena but his game-winning shot was still on his fingertips as the final buzzer sounded.
The Warriors may have lost more than a game, as Draymond Green limped off the court in the third quarter. His injury leads our three takeaways from the game.
1. Green nearly tallies triple-double but leaves with injury
Green was his typical self Tuesday night, scoring nine points on 2-of-6 shooting but he added 13 assists with 11 rebounds and had the Warriors cruising against the new-look Rockets — until he went down with a left knee strain in the third quarter.
Green did not return to the game and the Warriors are yet to announce how long they expect the 27-year-old to be out, if at all.
Omri Casspi also suffered a sprained ankle and did not return to the game, leaving the shorthanded Warriors little depth on the wing with Andre Iguodala (back) also out.
2. Two point guards don't cost Rockets assists
Chris Paul does not like the term "ball-dominant" but it's understandable why someone would call him and new teammate James Harden that.
The two guards found plenty of time to share the ball Tuesday as Paul finished with 11 assists and Harden with 10. The latter also finished with 27 points and six rebounds.
Paul though may need to figure some things out scoring-wise as he had a tough night going 2 for 9 from the field with a mere four points. But through one game the assists are still there and the offense was really good against one of the best defenses in the game.
3. Swaggy P fits right in for Warriors' debut
Nick Young, aka Swaggy P, loves to shoot the ball and the Warriors love to pass the ball off to players who can drain 3-pointers. Young was flat-out feeling it from long range in his debut with Golden State as he hit six shots from beyond the arc in the Warriors' loss.
He finished with 23 points on 8-of-9 shooting giving his new team exactly what they envisioned when he signed a one-year, $5.192 million deal this offseason.
Highlight
Green spent some time this summer working with rookie Jordan Bell. It showed on this pass in the third quarter.
