NBA free agency rumors: Wesley Matthews opts into final year of Mavericks contract

Wesley Matthews is remaining with the Dallas Mavericks.

The 31-year-old guard opted into the final year of the four-year, $70 million contract he signed with Dallas in 2015, according to a report by Yahoo Sports on Monday. Matthews will make $18.6 million during the 2018-19 season.

Matthews, a strong two-way player, averaged 12.7 points per game and shot 38.1 percent from 3-point range for Dallas last season.

After spending his rookie year in Utah, Matthews played his next five seasons in Portland. He appeared in the playoffs twice with the Trail Blazers and averaged a career-high 16.4 points per game in 2013-14.

Matthews originally signed his contract with the Mavericks after rupturing his Achilles in March 2015 while a member of the Trail Blazers.

Dallas made the playoffs in Matthews' first season with the franchise but has since struggled. The Mavericks finished 33-49 in 2016-17 and followed that with a 24-58 record this season. They have the third-best odds to win the 2018 NBA Draft lottery.
