Michael McIlorum has joined Catalans Dragons from Wigan Warriors, who have released Anthony Gelling from his contract.

Hooker McIlorum made his debut for Wigan in 2007 and played in three Super League Grand Finals, emerging victorious in 2010 and 2013.

The Ireland international signed a two-year contract with Catalans – despite reported interest from Canberra Raiders – after a conversation with Warriors chairman Ian Lenagan left him feeling it was time to move on having made 242 appearances for the club.

McIlorum said in a Wigan statement: "After speaking with Ian it was made clear my future was elsewhere and with interest from a couple of clubs it was agreed now was the best time to part company.

"It's now time for a new challenge for me and my family in another country which we are relishing with Catalans Dragons and are grateful to them for the opportunity."

Gelling was contracted to the Warriors until 2019 but has been granted an early release to return to New Zealand and be closer to his family.

While Gelling does not have another club lined up, Shaun Wane's side have already signed a replacement centre in the returning Dan Sarginson.

"It's always tough to move on. I've given up my 20s to represent the club and had an absolute blast in doing so. My family has always stood by me during my time away and the time has come to put them first," said Gelling.
